Sincee 4 separate pairs are being used for GbE there is a possibility of 5^4 = 625 codes to choose from when using all four pairs. Only four levels are really used for data, the fifth level (0v) is used for the 4-dimensional 8-state Trellis Forward Error Correction (FEC) code
